This is the most important cycle for all forms of life.... and it's the one WE avoid going through the most.

It's the most important one because it helps break all the other cycles that people go through.

It also relates to how we create the relationships in our lives, and how we sometimes destroy them as well.

But more importantly, I'm thinking about how we Re-Create them.

Everything changes... everyone is growing and hopefully moving forward together.

To be healthy (and happy) means that you need to be willing to Create, Destroy, and Re-Create YOURSELF.

Why I LOVE writing

I like to write.

I have liked to write since Jr High school!

In 1994 I read Douglas Coupland's "Life After God". In 1995 I saw the film "Basketball Diaries" (and consequently began reading Jim Carroll.) The film inspired me to start keeping my own journal, which is over 10 years strong now! I discovered other authors like Tom Robbins, E.E. Cummings, and books like The Catcher in the Rye, Another Roadside Attraction and even The Power of Now. Along with books and films, I LOVED music, and[especially] music with good lyrics.

And somewhere along that road of inspiration, I found that I loved to write...

Poetry.
Lyrics.
Prose.
Screenplays.
Blogs.
Graffiti... The list goes on.

I love writing so much, that I have been too busy to do it.... at least in the long form. As you can tell from my TWITTER page, I love writing (currently 5,846 tweets)

So in essence, the purpose of this post is to remind MYSELF how much I love writing.

Oh and since the proof is in the pudding, here is a poem I wrote a looooong long time ago:

moving through phases

What does Lightning in a Bottle mean to me?

For the last several months I have been working with The Do LaB (the crew of folks I love) on Lightning in a Bottle!

For those who don't know (anyone?) LIB is a festival that features
some of the most amazing music, art, performances, workshops,
speakers, yoga classes and more. It is a 4+ day camping festival that
is very focused on being a 'green' or sustainable annual event.

100's of people work to make the event possible (literally!) and for
many months.

Why am I working on this event?? That's simple: I loved the experience
I had the first two times I went!

And so today (the day the gates will open at LIB) marks the end of a
2+ year journey for me that started at the end of the last LIB
festival (2008).

Here's a quick insight into what happened then: I went to LIB for the
second time in 2008 and had a very profound and inspirational
experience. It was partly because of the people I shared the event
with and partly because of the magic of the intentions I was making
for my life at that time... but when it was all over I realized how
important this community of people was to me.

And I realized I had to be a part of it all.

I realized that I had to give back to the community and festivals/
events that had helped me discover new art, new ways of thinking, new
ways of interacting with my peers, and new definitions of what even
society means as a whole.

And for months and months I emailed The Do LaB to volunteer.
Something... Anything. I always saw them as the BEST at what they
DO... The ultimate crew to run with....

And to make a long (and amazing, wonderful, rewarding) story short:
Here I am...

A Part of It All!!!!!

And what is my intention now? That's also simple: To celebrate what we
have all accomplished... To celebrate all the creativity, love, hard
work, and dedication that EVERYONE has put into this event! And I also
intend to be fully present in the moments that are about to happen.

Don't blink this weekend, because capturing something as elusive as
Lightning, in something as small and fragile as a Bottle, is a rare
and awe inspiring thing to see!

Seriously!

I just celebrated my birthday last week, and that's always a good moment to reflect.

I couldn't be much more blessed..... and I have never been so aware!

Hyperaware..... so aware in fact that I have NO TIME left to follow all these pathes....

But there is one path....

And it's built on a love for creativity, and a drive to understand even the meaning of the word love.

The Universe is Creative..... but more on that later.

I've got to conclude this blog post, and get back to WORK! Oh work... you are the best ever!

About L. Croskey

One wouldn’t think that a collage artist, working with glue and paper would have once been bombing the streets of LA, but back in the 80’s Leonard Croskey known to everyone as LC, used to by the name of King Kaoski and ran with Pasadena grafitti crew, IBM: Images Beyond Mentality. This once strictly street art man then stretched his creative palate and turned to fashion and studied design for two years. This love for design is now the grafitti artist and fashion designer turned into a collage artist.
LC’s art combines grafitti’s movement and color with the design and pattern making of fashion. Collage is the creative outlet that brings his two different talents together and produces a new kind of image. An image with clean tight lines that reflect those of the modern digital arts with a graffiti bounce, except LC leaves the computer behind and lets paper, glue and scissors be the means to an artistic end. Inspired by vintage and pin up art, design and advertising, LC creates a world of imagination, a very distincet world of his own, an image that reflects a metaphor or fantasy or delusion, a false paradise. By using magazines and books ranging from vintage pin up to children’s books and numerous others, he takes these classic beauties and other collected images and places them in a modern design setting. Years of collected wrapping paper, wallpaper, scrap booking paper and magazines are the materials LC uses to build this girl inspired world, luring you in to find out that the story might actually be saying more than what it may have initially eluded to. LC’s art is a diary of emotions from his past and the lessons he has learned from these various, funny, sometimes dark relationships, and sometimes just good old fashioned sex.

LC is one of the most formidable forces in the contemporary art scene in LA today, curating shows and presenting and inspiring emerging artists with a multitude of events and galleries, including Cannibal Flower.

I would like to share some things about my big brother, Xavier Cross. My name is Michelle LaVon, but I'm also known as Star or Starburst.

You might already know and love him. Maybe you have seen or heard of him around our community. His caring, fun-loving, and hardworking nature have placed him dearly in the hearts of many people.

As his sister, I have been blessed with a lifetime of his inspiration and dedication. When we were children we played basketball and ran track together. We hiked over mountains and played like normal children do.

On August 13, 1999, months after having served in the US marine core, everything changed for Xavier. On that morning, he and a buddy were involved in an automobile accident. Xavier was ejected from his vehicle and then it rolled over on top of them both. After a full day in a coma Xavier woke up in the hospital to a drastically different reality. He had severed his vertebrae in ten separate places, broken multiple ribs, endured a severe head injury, and sustained numerous gashes and cuts throughout his body. After many surgeries, he slowly began his long recovery. The doctor’s original prognosis was summed up like this, "You are lucky to be alive, so be glad you're only in a wheelchair."

The "roller-pig", as Xavier preferred to call it, was his sole means of movement for over a year. But Xavier was too stubborn to believe that he would never walk again.

At first Xavier experienced no feeling from the chest down. Slowly, however, his nerves began to work again and he began to feel intense pain in his legs (which he still endures to this day). The doctors called this pain 'nerve-shocks'. It is a mystery why he has no feeling through most of his legs but still experiences these 'nerve-shocks'. The experts have yet to understand this about Xavier's condition.

After many months of rehabilitation Xavier started to understand how to work with his new body and deal with this new pain. He often tries to conceal it from those around him. I see him go through it on a day to day basis. But through all of this, he does not complain nor allow for any self-pity. He remains positive. This has always amazed and inspired me.

It has been and continues to be his strength of will that pushes him forward. The mobility that Xavier now has, is partially possible from two leg braces he must wear: up to the thigh on the left leg, and up to the knee on the right.

A few years ago life started to dramatically change again for Xavier. The first night he and I stepped into Space Island, a shift occurred. On this night, he first met the pirate family who would grow to love him. This meeting would lead to his 2005 arrival on the black rock playa for the first time. Many of us will agree that the playa can certainly test an individual on their first burn, and it made no exception for Xavier!

Within only a few hours, he had lost everything from his pockets and broke both his leg braces. But this was his gauntlet to run through and come out the other side. ('Thank you!' to those who helped his journey through that burn.) Upon his return to LA, I watched as he pulled his body into our apartment. He had experienced the playa w/ hardships that none of us will ever be able to imagine. He was exhausted and broken... but he was happy... Like so many before him, he too had found his Home.

It wasn't the dust, or the parties or the music, or even the art. Home was, for him, the discovery of a group of people, who cared, were open, and loving to him. (and also just as crazy!) He had found his pirate family at long last.

He became a fixture at Space Island helping out however he could. Last year while helping the Do Lab prepare for Coachella, I remember watching him carry out two large speakers, one slung over each shoulder. Then, I heard someone say, "We need to get back to work... Can’t be lazy around X."

All of us have limitations, but Xavier’s will not let his limitations keep him down. He is an inspiration to me and i know i am not alone in this feeling. He challenges me to seek the best in whatever challenges life delivers.

Ten years after the accident in August of 2009, Xavier told me that he reflected on his ten year journey and asked himself if he was done healing. His answer to himself was this:

"Not even close!"

So the last few months have been spent researching, calling, writing, emailing, and journaling – preparing to take his healing to the next level. Much of his investigations have been into stem cell research and the possibilities it could hold for him. The procedure that he is now preparing for is somewhat experimental. There are no guarantees, but he is going to give it a try.

The initial procedure will cost $30,000 and that does not cover any follow up treatments or rehabilitation. While he is doing everything he can to prepare his body and spirit for this next phase, he needs some assistance to help pay for it to begin.

Android Jones brings forth a new body of electrically dependent artwork to the 99 High Art Gallery on March 5th 2010. Jones draws his inspiration from the edge of reality to the corners of human perception. For Android the true medium of art is the mind. He translates the electrical impulses of creativity and imagination directly into an interface powered by light and energy. Several of his new works will be on display in custom assembled Light boxes measuring up to 8 feet in length and some over 4 feet in height. The Light Box objects display Jones' creative effort in rich and vibrant colors. The light boxes express a frequency that no analog medium can achieve. Each work brings the viewer closer to the intended experience of the medium in which they were created.

PHADROID: A combination of proprietary software, custom digital hardware and human sensitivity enable projected visuals to organically tune into the fluidity of motion created on stage. The shapes, colours and images generated by visionary artist Android Jones accentuate and intuitively blend in with a multitude of intricate dance movements created on stage by dancer Phaedra Ana. The experience unfolds in real time, tapping into the same current of creative energy, until a new level of spatial depth is achieved.

Each performance inherently reflects unified intentions as a joint frequency between the two artists that is palpable in the intensity of the space created in the auditorium. Using sound tracks of the latest contemporary underground music, the couple are capable of creating a physical-visual-audio state of synaesthesia that is a new addition to the pantheon of Live Performance Art – and which carries the potential to solidify into an entirely new form of artistic expression with an infinite amount of variation in possibility.

PANTyRAiD is the product of two music producers that met on the West Coast of the United States and share the same appreciation for well produced electronic dance music. Martin Folb (aka MartyParty) and Josh Mayer (aka Ooah) have always loved the art of songwriting instead of the typical club track production.

They set off to write melodic, musical journeys within the electronic genre. Each song has its own character, its own intention, and often crosses over many genres of electronic and traditional music. One thing is consistent in all PANTyRAiD production, attention to detail, not found in typical electronic production. Constant variation in the beat, and an almost overwhelming palette of instrumentation and audio tricks and techniques.

The combination of MartyParty and Ooah has started a movement back towards the power of the melody and instrumental composition. Together they have invented a formula for producing intense club songs that pull together gorgeous and modern electronic sounds with hard hitting beats, brining the best of hip-hop, dubstep and other forms of experimental electronic music.

The music is a new flavor of urban beat, a fresh new sexy sound that draws those that love to dance.

Oscar Gamboa II (OSCURE) has been one of the integral pioneers of the Los Angeles Underground Dance music scene, djing, producing and remixing music for over a decade. He's a well established Los Angeles dj/producer, and has licensed and released on his own label LABA Recordings as well as local indie labels such as Off World Music, Phunkedup Records, DMT3 Traxx, Fifth Gear,Red Bull Academy, and F.G.P. Music(Funky Ghetto Phonics). Colaborations in the Studio include talented musicians like Run DMC, Sula, Medusa & the Feline Science, ILL Knob(Wu-Tang), Stacy Brandt, and many more. * HENRY STRANGE *

A son of a biologist, Henry Strange spent much of his youth in his father’s laboratory counting fish eggs. But much like his father who was also a painter, Henry had a creative side, a love for music. He performed classical guitar and drums in rock bands for many years from youth throughout college.

Henry spent sleepless nights in the studio with old modular synthesizers studying the science of sound and synthesis. There he found his love for the avant-garde, which gave him a new focus to compose music with an experimental edge. He continued to produce several albums, and a series of experimental concerts in surround, sound and visual installations, and eventually started Pure Tone Productions, Inc. a production company devoted to the research of sound and the production of modern music.

Beyond composing for media, Henry continues his quest as an performing artist, scratching a Theremin, live processing and arranging a blend of hip hop and experimental textures, angular beats, and vocoded beatbox.

Everyone knows the lyrics: "All you need is love, love is all you need" by The Beatles.

I live by that line. It's practically the most important philosophy I try to live by.

During this past weekend, I had all types of beautiful moments with my lady, as we adventured around, and hung with her family.

It's so obvious to me that I get all of my strength from the people I love, and getting their love in return!

By having that strong belief that loving yourself, the people in your life, and the world in general, makes it much easier to deal with any other situation that should arise. When you are sad, worried, or afraid, love will guide you. It's primal. Humans have lived in tribes, and pairs for hundreds of thousands of years. It's our instinct to realize that we are all connected.

Anyway folks... find strength in the things you know are right! Hold yourself and everyone else as equals, sharing this planet, and this life.

It's hard to put this epic night into words..... Amazing, rare, priceless!

After working on the promotions for over 3 months and helping get people from all over California excited about it, I was eager to see who would be coming, and how they would enjoy what The Do LaB had created.

The time for LUCENT L'AMOUR had arrived!!

The moment I stepped foot into the space, I was gitty with glee! Soooo much to SEE, HEAR & EXPERIENCE!

First and for most, I was very lucky to be spending the night with my valentine. She was kind enough to give me a spiffy new haircut and made me a fresh heart for my shirt. I was sportin some pinstripe slacks too (keep it fresh gents)!

The event itself, flew by in whirlwind of excitement. Every step I took, I saw something new, something creative, and the harder I looked the more creativity I saw.

The music was amazing! World class all the way, every single act!

The installations, interactive environments, and giant sculptures were from beyond wonderland!

And the art was happening everywhere, at the same time, times 100!!!

I spent most of the night making sure that my friends and my team were having a good night, and it seemed like smiles all around!

Then in a flash, it was all over!

Hours and hours of music, art, performance, and thousands of smiling faces....

just an echo in my ear, and a flash when I blink!

.... was this all a dream?

Work vs Play

For most of my professional career these two things have usually been at odds.

But not until recently (last few years) have I managed to bring these two things together to a point where work = play and play = work.

Today, I've been looking through almost a thousands pictures from Lucent L'amour (our big Valentines music and art festival) and I am almost overcome with tears of joy. Seriously.

Chicago, his passion for House music, and sharing it with the world,
exploded. Mark experimented with a deeper style, dropping De La Soul, disco

nightclubs. While exploring his love for the purist forms of House Music,
Mark developed his trademark style: Mushroom Jazz; acid jazz infused with

Solvent and Michna are both from the world renowned record label Ghostly International! And Kether is from California's own Muti Music.

The Artists:

SOLVENT

Solvent is Jason Amm, a robot music composer, analog synthesizer fetishist, and co-founder of the renowned Suction Records label. Born in Zimbabwe in 1972, Amm currently resides in a room full of machines in Toronto, Canada. He has been releasing his unique brand of synthesizer-pop music since 1997, and is best known for his releases on Morr Music (2001’s Solvent City) and Ghostly International (2004’s Apples & Synthesizers, 2005’s Elevators & Oscillators).

Solvent has created his own unique version of electro-pop: too elegant and sincere for the electroclash set, too complex and contemporary to sound like it was recorded in 1981, and too seeped in the time-honoured traditions of melody, songwriting and hands-on synthesis to be lost in the overcrowded world of IDM. Along with some notable remixes for Soft Cell, Alter Ego, and Adult, Solvent has also contributed standout tracks to several influential electronica compilations in recent years, including Putting The Morr Back In Morrissey (Morr Music), Disco Nouveau (Ghostly International), and Misery Loves Company (Ersatz Audio). His songs have also included in high-profiles DJ mix CDs, including Sven Vath’s Sound of the 5th Season (Cocoon), Dr. Lektroluv’s Lektroluv 5 (541), and Death in Vegas’s Fabriclive 23 (Fabric London).

Today, Solvent is widely regarded in the underground electronica community as being at the forefront of electro-pop’s return to form. UK magazine The Wire recently described Solvent as part of a new generation of composers “gleefully blurring the lines” between modern techno and vintage techno-pop. Solvent currently records exclusively for Ghostly International, and has been touring extensively since 2004, having shared the stage with Adult., Legowelt, Bola, Junior Boys, Matthew Dear, Lusine, Lowfish, and others.

MICHNA

Growing up in both NY and Miami, Michna (real name: Adrian Michna) is that unique breed of artist that draws from both the urban and the tropical. As a youngster, Adrian started DJing parties with cassettes and playing trombone in a band on the NYC bar circuit including the infamous Lion’s Den and CBGB’s.

After moving to Miami in the mid-90’s, he co-founded the pioneering Secret Frequency Crew, who deftly mixed instrumental hip-hop and electronic into a coherent whole. Their appropriately titled 12” “Miami Eyes,” became an underground hit and caught the attention of a then-unknown Diplo who would ask him for production work. SFC’s debut LP “Forest of the Echo Downs” also put Adrian on Ghostly’s radar as it was one of label founder Sam Valenti IV’s top LPs in 2004.

Currently based in Brooklyn NY, Adrian Michna (aka DJ Egg Foo Young) has become a staple in the NYC club scene, known for his chameleon like abilities. Outside of the club, he has been able to pursue a few hobbies such as building furniture, bicycles, photography, skeeball, and gloss lustre collages. While working on his solo album, he also found time to remix the mysterious Jandek (the only artist ever to do so) and produce on Brazilian group Bonde Do Role’s debut LP for Domino/Mad Decent.
It seems Adrian has found his stride as a solo artist, bringing together his myriad influences into a succinct sonic personage. His debut LP “Magic Monday” and the elevating single “Triple Chrome Dipped” are works of distinction and taste, getting asses on the floor in style.

KETHER

Kether consists of two groundbreaking West Coast based producers, Tim Hauser and Stephan Jacobs, who write, breathe, create & produce music. KETHER Music is composed using analog hardware & software, creating an organic-electric live sound scape feel within its airwaves.

Stephan Jacobs and Tim Hauser(Ruff Hauser) refer to their style as intermingling-melodic & sub-sonic frequencies, creating a very open space for brain neurons to assimilate the experience.

Kether's style of music has created a hybrid-sub-genre of its own kind, blending musical interpretations of Minimal, Dubstep, IDM, Breaks & Glitch~

Ever since 2001, I have been on a path of finding myself and remember exactly what my purpose and intention is on this planet, with this life.

But along the way I have occasionally gotten sidetracked and have been misguided.

But thankfully the universe is constantly reminding me!

I am supposed to spread love, compassion, and wisdom. And if you've read my blog posts this summer, you clearly saw this was the summer of love 2009!

And the irony comes when I realize what the trigger for this inspiration is....

It comes when I have the least amount of love, compassion, and wisdom!

...At the exact moment that I am lacking even the tiniest amount of love or compassion or wisdom, it is then that I explode with energy and motivation to find it again!

They say all you need is love..... I believe it's true because the love that I have known the exist, is enough to inspire the world. Literally!

And all the side effects, like vulnerability, become worth the risk!

and my horoscope seems to by synced up with my intentions... Go universe!

So lets celebrate!

So it's that time of year, to take a moment to remember what you are thankful for....

For me, a moment is an understatement.....

This whole year I have been very aware of what I've been thankful for all along the way.

And there is A LOT that I should be thankful for!

1) I am in love with an amazing girl! I am so grateful for all the memories we've created this summer, and I'm so honored to have her love and affection!

2) I have the opportunity to work with some of the most amazing people who have turned into great friends. In fact it's been exactly a year now that I've officially worked with The Do LaB!

3) My friends and creative community... wow! I know some extremely talented and kind people, that I am very proud to call my friends!

4) Having the gift to be able to make music and be creative! It's up to me.... I was born with the passion for it.... now I just have to make it a bigger part of my life!

5) And yes I am thankful for the fact that Los Angeles has one of the best art/music scenes on earth! Including this weekend:

Mar Vista Family Center, The mission is to provide low-income families with quality preschool education, youth enrichment, and educational tools to create positive change in their lives and in their communities. Every program adheres to the basic premise that it is critical to empower children, teens and adults to play vital and responsible roles – as decision makers, community leaders, mentors, classroom volunteers, and fundraisers – at MVFC.

Peace4Kids.org provides programs and services for foster and at-risk youth from ages 5-18, and after emancipation until age 24. Peace4Kids is truly on the front lines in addressing the needs of foster and at-risk youth in the South Los Angeles neighborhoods of Watts, Willowbrook and Compton. They create a strong foundation through programs focused on creative expression and life skills, allowing our kids to discover their unique voice and limitless potential for success.

EL PAPA CHANGO (El Circo) is coming all the way from San Francisco to join us behind the decks. We can't tell you how excited we are to have him with us in our humble little house. His unique style of Latin-inspired beats has been moving dance floors for years.

Opening up for him we have LUCKY 7 MAMBO (Dimelo! Records) "LIVE". Inspired by the multi-ethnic music-fusion of 1950s and 60s’ Spanish Harlem, Lucky 7 Mambo" features the haunting harmonies of the vibraphone, an unlikely instrument now, as much as it was in the 50s and 60s. This uniquely American-made style draws the best of the Cuban son, African-American jazz and Puerto Rican soul. "Lucky 7 Mambo" is inspired by old-school greats like Jimmy Sabater, Cheo Feliciano, and Joe Cuba.

She combines the finest elements of visual art, intricately designed costumes and sets, burlesque steeped in tradition, erotic and traditional dance with aerial finesse, to create a virtuoso performance art extravaganza. She is not only a well-known local performer and artist in Chicago but she has also reached international status and travels regularly around the country to perform. This past July Angela Eve was rated by Chicago magazine as one of the top 3 burlesque shows in Chicago. She is the creator and driving force of Eve’s Parlor Burlesque in Chicago and produces large-scale multi - media burlesque/art events with her production art team called Image Collective. She is proud to be a part of this event.

Krysten Korruption, from Chicago and now Los Angeles, is a strong and talented performer whom has been dancing and performing since the tender age of 3. Her explosive solo routines and group choreography have been highlighted at many Eve's Parlor Burlesque shows as well as other troupes in the Chicagoland area over the years. Now based in Los Angeles, she is a active performer dancing with The Wandering Marionettes and the Venice based burlesque troupe, The Speakeasies. She is thrilled to be able to team up with CIA to produce this show.

Jenn Martin (North Carolina) an incomparable rockabilly goth sensation specializing in pin-up and burlesque performance, singing, modeling and anything else to satisfy your retrophilia.

Roo Ruane (LA/Cirque Berzerk) She is sure to heat up the stage with her incredible fire dancing and allure. Her act is truly unique and unforgettable.

Scarlett D'Evil (Chicago) will quite happily be making her California Burlesque debut with this performance. Among other glamourous activities she regularly performs Neo classical and Rock-n-Roll Burlesque in Chicago, mainly with the groups Eve's Parlor Burlesque and Girly-Q. She is also a part of the performance art troupe SS-Triple X.

Nikki NeFarious (LA), an artist in everything she does, through her work she seeks to express her own innate creativity, sexuality, complexity, and, yes, nerdiness without regard to its relative shock value or banality.

Soma Snakeoil (LA), has made her mark as a fetish performer and model and will be making her burlesque debut for this event.

Candace Love (The Wandering Marionettes), is truly an amazing and inspiring performer who dances from the soul. We are very excited to have her perform her chilling solo piece.

BIO: Vokab Kompany has burst on the scene after quickly ascending the rank of the west coast market. With relentless drive they have worked to combine high-energy stage performances, 7 piece live indie electro hip-hop (with a violinist to boot), with catchy hooks and a rhythm based harmonic vocal delivery to find themselves emerging from an underground electronic, hip-hop scene, which primarily embraces DJ's and MC's. While they still have an edge and integrity in their writing process/production, their songs have mass appeal. It's a sound that has deep indie roots, with forays into soul, funk and fresh west coast hip-hop laced over electronic beats and all performed LIVE!!
